The article discusses the digital divide in Indonesia, with a focus on how it affects women. While digital technology is rapidly advancing and becoming integral to daily life, Indonesian women lag behind men in digital literacy due to geographic, educational, economic, and cultural barriers.
The divide manifests in limited access to technology, lack of confidence and skills, and entrenched gender norms. Women often use digital tools for social interaction rather than professional or educational purposes, further perpetuating the disparity.
Key Challenges:
- Educational gaps result in lower ICT skills and knowledge among women.
- Geographic and cultural restrictions limit women’s mobility and access.
- Economic and systemic inequalities, including male-dominated ICT industries, restrict women’s participation in technology sectors.
- Patriarchal culture discourages women from engaging with technology, often viewing it as a male domain.
Efforts to Address the Gap:
Empowering women through digital literacy is critical to overcoming these barriers. The article outlines a framework with five competencies:
- Access: Skillfully finding and using digital tools.
- Analyze & Evaluate: Assessing the credibility and relevance of information critically.
- Create: Producing ethical, high-quality digital content.
- Reflect: Adhering to social and ethical norms in digital communication.
- Act: Using technology to solve problems and engage meaningfully in society.
Benefits: Improved digital literacy can enable women to enhance productivity, access new markets, pursue education, and participate more actively in economic and social development.
